Based on High Fliers research on top companies the average number of applicants per graduate position is about 391 (see below). Other surveys give even greater numbers of applications per place. Surveys by HESA estimate that up to 160 applicants are chasing some graduate vacancies at some of the country’s top companies. For example, marketing and sales jobs at firms such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble have seen 160 applications per graduate job advertised.
The number of applicants per graduate job in banking and finance is 84; oil and energy, 74; retailing, 64; and investment banking, 48. Competition for the best graduate business jobs is intense. But remember, although the number of applications for places for business graduate jobs is high, most top employers complain that majority of students are not well prepared for their job search.
